Elections

When Pope Callistus II died on 13 December 1124, a majority of the cardinals had reached an agreement to elect Cardinal Sasso of Saint Stephens Church in Rome, but a powerful family in the area known as the Pierleoni family opposed him and just a few days later they had convinced the other Cardinals to elect someone else, one who was in favor with the Pierleoni family.

But it was a very short time after this election before the Frangipanis burst into the papal apartments and wounded the pope which then had to abdicate the throne.

Another agreement was reached and Cardinal Lambert Scannabecchi of Ostia was elected.  The Pierleoni family received a large sum of money and other favors for their support of the election.
