The French had slaves as a part of their property. The French laws stated that slaves were required to be converted to the Catholic faith. The Catholic Church recognized these people (converts) as slaves and not free men. The church is supposed to represent the freedom that we have from the world through Christ. But the church was (is) bound by the ideologies of man and not God.

Indian slaves and servants were common in French and Spanish as well as British Colonial settlements.
Thousands of white people too were bound to servitude, particularly in the mid Atlantic region.
Of course slavery was everywhere, few people questioned such inequalities in the social order and as one historian wrote "it was the only order they had ever known"
African slavery dwarfed other forms of servitude and was growing.

An Indian Squaw of full age was herself an indentured servant of a colonial household in which she agree that she did this on her own free will and that she would serve the household until her death. She further stated that if she would have any children that they would automatically serve the household for their entire life.
